As we head into the second half of the winter season, our skin may be in need of a rejuvenating boost. If you’re like me, your skin may be feeling dry and tight this time of year. Additionally, wearing a mask all the time is contributing to numerous new skin conditions that can be exacerbated by winter. The American Academy of Dermatology Association listed common skin conditions from frequent mask-wearing including: acne, raw/irritated skin and excessive dryness.

In today’s post we’re sharing 5 skin care tips to give you glowing healthy skin this winter. We’ve curated this list of our favorite winter skincare tips and tricks. Check out the tips below and be sure to share this post with a friend!

5) The Double Cleanse

If there’s one trick to takeaway from this article let this one be it -- you need to do a double cleanse with your face wash. What does that mean? It means the first pass at washing your face takes off makeup, dirt, and excess oil. Once your face is clean, you should do a second cleanse to get the face wash deep into your pores and actually clean your face.

Now with this double cleanse technique, you need to be using a mild face wash. Don't use a scrub or anything with harsh chemicals in it as this will irritate your skin. Alternately, you can try using something like micellar water, an extremely gentle formula that looks and feels like water, but includes tiny particles called micelles to trap impurities (dirt, makeup) and lift them up and away without drying your skin in the process, to cleanse your face first. The great thing about Micellar water is that it’s usually under $10 for a large bottle, which helps save on more expensive face wash.

4) Try a Peel

Next up, try a face peel. Winter is the ideal time for a face peel because the reduced sun/UV light exposure helps your skin heal safely. During the winter, the dry, cold air can cause skin issues like eczema, rosacea, and acne to flare up. A peel is designed to do two primary things: 1) hydrate the skin with specific ingredients designed to go deep into the layers of skin to add moisture and 2) exfoliate top layers of dead skin. Doing a peel in the winter will help give your skin an added boost of support to combat harsh winter conditions.

3) Dermaplane

Have you heard of dermaplaning? If not, we’re excited to be the ones to introduce you to this quick and effective skincare trick. Dermaplaning is the removal of fine hairs (ie ”peach fuzz”) on the top of the skin’s surface and the exfoliation of the skin by removing dead skin cells. To do a dermaplane, you’ll need a very thin razor, like the Tinkle Razors, designed specifically for this purpose. Ensure you’ve washed your face before starting, and then very carefully, keeping the blade parallel, run the razor along your face. Finish with a moisturizer when you’re done!

2) Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

Okay, this one seems really obvious but we couldn’t not include it. The winter time is an especially important time to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Be sure to use a moisturizer designed to work with your skin type. For example, if you have naturally oily skin, you’ll want to use a specific moisturizer designed for that skin type. Someone with naturally dry skin would use a different type of moisturizer. Protect your skin with a consistent skincare routine; moisturize mornings and nights and be sure to use a sunscreen during the day. Doing this consistently will help combat the harsh winter air that can wreck havoc on your skin.

1) Use Water to Your Benefit

Last but not least, we’ve focused on topical applications for improving your skin during the winter, but that’s not all you can do. You also need to ensure you’re getting enough water intake during the day. The winter may seem like a time when you need less water because temperatures aren’t as high and you’re not losing moisture as easily, right?

Wrong! The dry winter air actually robs your skin of moisture and regardless if you’re sweating or not, you need a lot of water during the day to keep your body functioning properly and your skin hydrated. Current recommendations are to drink half your body weight in ounces of water a day. So for example, if you weigh 145 lbs you should drink about 72 ounces of water a day, which is about ½ a gallon.
