How to make a pumpkin spice latteIt’s official, everyone’s favorite Starbucks drink is back! The Pumpkin Spice Latte or PSL, for those so-inclined, is Starbucks best-selling seasonal drink. There was quite the hoopla and media hype surrounding the announcement that the beloved drink would be released earlier than normal this year. Three cheers for the PSL! Right? Well, maybe wait before you start cheering. Along with the lines of customers waiting to get their lattes, numerous reports claim the drink is far from nutritious and doesn’t actually contain any pumpkin.

A recent article published by USA TODAY reports the Pumpkin Spice Latte is said to contain artificial coloring linked to potential cancer risks, in some cases high fructose corn syrup, and no actual pumpkin.

To ensure control over ingredients, we decided to share our own DIY Pumpkin Spice Latte recipe so you can enjoy a delicious (and safe) drink this fall!

DIY Pumpkins Spice Latte » IngredientsINGREDIENTS

  • 1/4 cup cream
  • 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 2 tbsp pumpkin (canned)
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 shot espresso (optional)

  1. In a small pan, heat the pumpkin and spices. Stirring continuously and cook thoroughly.
  2. Once the pumpkin is cooked, add sugar.
  3. While the pumpkin mixture is heating,
  4. make espresso or coffee. (omit this step if you prefer a delicious non-coffee beverage)
  5. In a separate bowl, heat milk and vanilla extract. Make sure not to burn the milk – whisk continuously.
  6. Once the milk is heated, blend until frothy.
  7. Next pour the milk and vanilla into the pumpkin bowl. Blend.
  8. Once blended, pour espresso/coffee into cup.
  9. Layer the pumpkin mixture on top. Add whipped cream, and spices to top, if desired.
